Proverbs 13:24
(related verses: 2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:20-2)

How do you deal with passages in the Bible that seem to say something you are very uncomfortable with? We should not simply ignore or explain away those Bible passages.

Proverbs 13:24 is a good example of this kind of passage. Submission and authority are two issues that the reigning culture of our day feels very negative towards. One of our core problems with God is that even as Christians we have the remaining tendency to assert our will over God's will. But actually it is good to learn to submit to God. God provides parents with tools to teach their children and also correct and discipline them. If parents put those tools to use in appropriate ways, they will be leading their children closer to Jesus as they begin to understand their own sin and the reason Jesus had to die on the cross. Using the full range of tools God has given parents also tends to lead to children who have self control and who will live happier and more productive lives.

Preached at Redeemer Presbyterian Church, Florence, AL on January 31, 2010.
